ROSEN O-Ren Coat in Ivory Sashiko Linen
The O-Ren looks deceptively simple, but it took us a few rounds of searching for a tailor who would take up the task of making it. We wanted the end result to be a large garment that wraps the wearer like a newborn baby being enveloped in his mother's arms for the first time. Safe and warm before the world gets to them.
The technical details include: a rounded collar hidden under oversized waterfall collar that is large enough to drape across the front, back yoke seam that runs from one end of the sleeve across the back to the other end of the sleeve, giant waist pockets to store passports and sandwiches (we cannot stress how much we value functional pockets), and a batwing silhouette that accommodates varying body shapes and sizes. There is no closure to the coat.
In order to achieve the feel of the safety blanket, it was important for us to pick the right fabric. We combed through thousands of fabric rolls and shortlisted two we've fallen in love with; this sashiko-woven linen and Japanese boiled silk-wool fabric. Both have vastly different characteristics. This linen fabric has a substantial weight that drapes well without looking shapeless. Upon closer inspection one can see the large weaves of the yarn.
